How I Made $80+ Selling to Plato’s Closet – in One Day!

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’ve tried to sell clothes on apps like Poshmark and Vinted but haven’t had a ton of success. My friend Mackenzie said her town had a store called Plato’s Closet that bought trendy clothes at 30-40% resale value. I thought I might have some luck, so I packed up almost all of the clothes currently on my Vinted, set the app to Vacation Mode (to avoid someone buying an item I’d sold to Plato’s), and set off.

I have to admit, it was pretty intimidating walking in as a first-time seller. The cashiers at this particular location gave me a sort of snooty vibe, and told me to come back in about 25 minutes. Many minutes later, they finished sorting through my 50+ items and told me they’d like to purchase 8 of them. For a little less than $30. That’s an average of $3.75 an item, if you’re wondering.

I had to remind myself that I’d gone there on a mission to just get rid of my items, no matter the cost, so I said okay. I left with two trash bags of my clothes and $30 in my pocket.

I have to say, I was definitely disappointed. I had several items that I thought, for sure, would sell, including two pairs of gently used Vans and a vintage Dooney & Bourke bag.

I drove another half hour to the second location in Escondido, and let me tell you, the results were shocking. They bought 21 of my items, for $57.50. An average of $2.74 per item, I wasn’t thrilled, but I was pleased. Most of the items they selected were items I had long outgrown or were destined for donation. This store took mostly Forever 21, American Eagle, H&M, and Old Navy. Thankfully, I bought almost exclusively from Forever 21 my freshman year of college and kept everything in a bin *just in case*.

I went home 29 items lighter, $87.50 richer, and 100% happier. I still have some items to sell, so if you’re interested please feel free to check out my Vinted profile. All items have been marked down – most are under $5 – and will be donated soon, so scoop ’em up while you can! If you buy a bundle, I’ll even give you a discount!
